Seminar Recap | Prof. Iginio Gagliardone on Decolonial Approaches to Communication and Sovereignty

As part of the teaching partnership between the University of Salerno and the University of Padova, on Thursday, April 3rd, we had the pleasure of hosting an online seminar with Prof. Iginio Gagliardone, Professor of Media Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa).
In his talk, titled “Decolonial Approaches to Communication and Sovereignty”, Prof. Gagliardone offered a thought-provoking reflection on how communication systems and notions of sovereignty are being reimagined through decolonial lenses. Drawing on his extensive research across the African continent, he explored how local epistemologies challenge dominant narratives and reshape the global discourse around media, power, and digital governance.
The seminar was attended by students and faculty from both universities and sparked a lively discussion on the role of media in postcolonial contexts.
